What is Link Building? A Guide for Beginners

What is Link Building A Guide for Beginners

If you have been looking into or implementing search engine optimization (SEO) tactics, you have probably come across the term link building more than once. Link building is a tactic used to help your SEO efforts, and when done correctly, it can help your SEO tactics be extremely successful.

What exactly is link building?

The purpose of SEO is to help drive traffic to your website. Link building is a tactic in which you place a link to your website on other websites throughout the Internet. By doing this, you are creating an easy way for other people to find your website.

What’s the purpose of link building?

Think about it this way: have you ever been reading content on a website that had links embedded throughout the content?  Have you ever clicked on these links in order to be transported to another website? This is link building. Had you not clicked on the link, you would have never seen this website.

When you use link building on other websites, you are allowing that site’s readers to find your website, which is a great thing. You want people to find your site.

But generating traffic isn’t the only plus side to link building—it can also help you increase your rankings in the search engines. In order for search engines to determine how pages get ranked, they use tools called spiders to crawl through your site looking for keywords and other factors of their algorithm. One thing these spiders look for is how often links to your website are found on other sites. If a spider sees that your website is rapidly being linked back to from other sites, it will recognize your site as being important, which will increase your search engine ranking. And when you’re ranked higher in the search engines, you will also gain more traffic to your site.

How do I implement link building?

Everyone always wonders how they’re supposed to magically get links to their website placed on other websites, but it’s actually not as hard as one may think. There are a few different tactics you can use to implement link building.

First, you can always ask for a link exchange. This means that you will reach out directly to the owner of a website and ask them if they would provide a link to your site on their website in exchange for you doing the same thing for them. Some website owners will be willing to accept this deal while others may turn you down, so don’t expect everyone to say yes.

You can also gain valuable links through guest blogging. If you are asked to write a guest blog post, make sure that the blog’s owner will allow you to include a link to your website in your blog piece. This is a great way to get your site in front of a large and dedicated following.

Along with guest blogging, you can even tap into contributing writer posts. There are many websites out there today that allow their members to write articles or blog posts and have them posted on their site. Business to Community is popular as well as Examiner. Both of these sites showcase writing from other people, and these sites allow their contributing writer to place links to their website in their bios.

Finally, you can use the power of comments to link back to your site. If you read a blog article that interests you, comment on it and link back to your website, but only do this if it makes sense. Don’t simply link for the sake of linking, otherwise people may consider your comment as spam.

Now that you have a better understanding of link building, you should try and use it to your advantage. Building links back to your site can greatly improve your SEO, so hurry and get started today.
