Do you have a lot of friends? If you do, how many of them do you actually know and how many of them have you met online? Social networking sites have made it easier than ever to make new friends or to keep up with those friends you had back in your high school days that you no longer see.
All of the aspects of social networking are not positive however. Before you head online to create your account, you should weigh the pros and cons and you should know some of the dangers that come with accounts on social networking sites.
Pros of Social Networking
Obviously, social networking sites can be a great thing. MySpace was huge a few years ago but has now been replaced by sites like Facebook and Twitter. When you make an account on a social networking site, you are allowed to log into your email account and see which of your friends have accounts on the same site so that you can friend them. When you make a social networking site, you can join a network. This means that you can join into your high school or your college network and find the people you had classes with. You can share what you are doing with all of your friends or share videos and photos. Social networking sites are great ways for you to share things with your loved ones who may be miles away. Social networking is a great way for you to get recognized if you are running your own business and it is a great way for you to sell products. Additionally, social networking is a great way for you to build a fan base if you are someone who is in a band just starting out.
Cons of Social Networking
Keep in mind all of the good things you have just heard about social networking, but think about this as well. Social networking has a negative side. Some people do not use sites like Facebook or Twitter as they should. Many times, people use these sites to write hateful messages or tweets to people. Facebook allows people to write on other people’s walls so that what they have to say is public knowledge. Facebook and Twitter actually act as tools to bullies. Accounts can get hacked and your personal information can get shared with the world. These sites are dangerous in more ways than one because people have your name and where you live. This can cause real life problems.
Social networking certainly has it’s good side but just like anything else, there is a negative side as well. If you use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter for their intended purpose, which is to keep up with friends, you’ll be just fine. However, there are people out there who abuse these sites and do not use them properly. It is these people who take the good out of social networking. Decide for yourself whether or not you want to get involved and make an account.
